Safe City Driving

If you have learned to drive in a parking lot, the spaced-out suburbs, or the countryside, you may not have dealt with much driving anxiety just yet. You may have dealt with a small amount when you were learning to drive, but because of the fewer amount of cars and more space, you may not have felt the type of anxiety that comes with driving close to or within a city or downtown area.

Plenty of people live in the suburbs or countryside, but there is generally more space than a city area. You have more space on the road, more space in parking lots, and parallel parking is uncommon in these areas. This gives you more time to think and make a decision, slow down, and decide safely what you want to do on the road. Accidents can happen anywhere, but most people feel significantly less driving or road anxiety when they have more space and there are fewer people around.

However, you may end up moving to a city or downtown area. You may get a new job downtown. Or — you may just frequent the city because of things to do or places to eat. Whatever the case, these city driving experiences are more nerve-wracking for many people. Different people may feel more or less anxious than others, but most people feel more nervous driving within a tight city than they do on a country road.

There are more people, less space on the roads, and smaller or less accessible parking areas. And the dreaded parallel park? MUCH more common in downtown or city areas. If you are trying to head downtown for dinner on a Friday night, it is probably best that you attempt to master parallel parking as you may be unable to avoid it.

With less space and more people what are some things, we can do to stay safe driving downtown?

-Slow down. There are more people and less space between stoplights. Driving slower gives you more time to make adjustments. If you need to move out of the way or decide to make a turn last minute, slowing down gives you a safer way to do so.

-Keep space. Taillights will be up close and personal during a crowded city drive time. Make sure you have plenty of space between you and the driver in front of you. There may be less space in a city, but this does not mean you have to or should get closer to cars than you need to be.

-Plan ahead. If you are a nervous driver. City driving may not be your favorite. Plan ahead so you know what time you need to leave. When driving into a city, adding another ten minutes to your travel time can give you the wiggle room you need to keep your cool if things get tight. If you are nervous about the parking situation, you can always use Google maps to view the road and check out available parking.
