Requirements to have a driver’s license in the United States

Requirements to have a driver’s license in the United States. The requirements to get a Driver’s License might vary from state to state, so that some rules can be different. However, there are general conditions. For example, you should apply for a Learner’s Permit and consider that Connecticut has different types of driver’s licenses. For each one, there’s a corresponding type of instruction permit.

Requirements to have a driver’s license in the United States

Teen learner permit

It is the first step for drivers under 18. Here, you will see the list of the required documentation and the steps to get a driver’s license.

  • Identity
  • Date of birth
  • Social security number
  • Legal presence in the US
  • Home address.
  • It is also important to complete and provide a certificate of parental consent.
  • Schedule your written test and pay the fee.
  • Complete the application form, pass a vision examination, and pay the permit fee.
  • Bring the learner’s permit, proof of completing an 8-hour safe driving course, driver training, and parental training for the road test. You should use a properly registered and insured vehicle, valid motor vehicle registration certificate, and Connecticut insurance card.
  • You can pay the license fee and get your teen driver’s license once you have passed the road test.

Adult driver’s license

Before getting the license, you should apply for a learner’s permit regardless of age. You will probably have to hold the permit for 90 days before taking the road test. When you turn 18, your teen license is a full adult driver’s license, so you do not have to exchange it.

The required documentation and the process will be the same as in a teen learner permit; in this case, you do not need to provide parental consent.
